André Cayatte (born February 3, 1909 in Carcassonne , † February 6, 1989 in Paris ) was a lawyer and important French film director of the 20th century . His films deal with the problems and abuses of the French judiciary.

Life

Cayatte studied law, then worked as a lawyer and devoted himself to writing. As an author of award-winning novels - in 1940 he was awarded the Prix Cazes for his work The Trap - he gained public attention, so that he soon devoted himself entirely to writing. In 1937 he turned to the medium of film and initially wrote entertaining scenarios, changed his field of activity in 1942 and became a film director. Cayatte began his cinematographic career with the film The False Beloved , based on the novel of the same name by Honoré de Balzac , followed by film adaptations of French classics. In 1949 he achieved his first international success with The Lovers of Verona , a modern adaptation of Romeo and Juliet .

One year later, Cayatte broke away from the cheerful film genre and from literary adaptations and devoted himself to the topic of "Analysis of Justice"; he relentlessly criticized the French judiciary and its methods. With films such as jury court or Before the Flood , he quickly gained a lot of attention. After criticizing the judiciary, in his last creative period he put social problems at the center of his films and, with Die For Love, also addressed taboo subjects at the time, such as the forbidden connection between a teacher and a young student.
