- Istanbul / Turkey : The 24th European Swimming Championships end in Istanbul. Germany leads the medal table with 36 medals. Behind are Russia and the Netherlands .
Monday 2nd August 1999
- Belgium / Brussels : The bodies of the 15 and 14-year-old youths Yaguine Koita and Fodé Tounkara from Guinea , West Africa, are found on board an Airbus A330 aircraft operated by the Sabena airline . The refugees boarded as stowaways in Conakry and froze to death.
- Katima Mulilo / Namibia : In the morning hours, rebels of the Caprivi Liberation Army attack several strategic locations in the regional capital Katima Mulilo and thus trigger the Caprivi conflict . In addition to the police station and the Namibian radio station, the CLA also occupies the city's airport. Immediately afterwards, President Nujoma declared a state of emergency.
- Philadelphia / United States : The psychological thriller The Sixth Sense celebrates its world premiere and receives mostly positive reviews.
Saturday 7th August 1999
- Dagestan / Russia : The War of Dagestan begins with an attack of some 400 Chechen and Arab irregulars under the command of Shamil Basayev and the Islamists Ibn al-Khattab to the Chechen neighboring republic of Dagestan.
Monday 9th August 1999
- Moscow / Russia : The Lower House of the Federation Assembly confirms President Boris Yeltsin's proposed head of domestic intelligence, Vladimir Putin, as the new Prime Minister of Russia .

- Romania : A total solar eclipse can be observed in several countries in Western , Central and Eastern Europe . In Romania, the moon covers 100% of the sun for two minutes and 23 seconds.
Friday August 13, 1999
- Heidelberg / Germany : At a press conference, Steffi Graf announces her immediate resignation from professional tennis .
- Tokyo / Japan : The state explains the Japan since the 19th century established as a national symbol white flag with red sun disc officially national flag and installed the song Kimi Ga Yo ( German domination of his majesty ) as the official national anthem .
Tuesday 17th August 1999
- Gölcük / Turkey : As a result of an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 M w at 3.02 a.m. local time, over 18,000 people died. The cities hardest hit are Adapazarı , Gölcük, İzmit and Yalova .
Thursday August 19, 1999
- Greifswald / Germany : On the street, a passer-by recognizes Dieter Zurwehme , who left the open prison in December 1998 . The convicted murderer can be arrested without resistance. Authorities linked upset with six murders and one attempted rape since he escaped.
Tuesday August 24, 1999
- Bremen / Germany : The Bremen bunker murder is carried out. The double murder of a Kurdish couple in love takes place near the submarine bunker Valentin in the Bremer district of Rekum .
Friday August 27, 1999
- Germany : Electronic Arts publishes Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun, the fourth game in the Command & Conquer series in Germany. It was developed by Westwood Studios .
- Kazakhstan : The space travelers of the French - Russian Mir-Perseus mission are returning to Earth after about six months from the Mir space station . There they researched various questions from the fields of life sciences , materials science and space technology.
Saturday August 28, 1999
- Bad Godesberg / Germany : The 1,950 m long Bad Godesberg tunnel will be completed after almost seven years of construction. It has two tubes, separated according to the direction of travel, which open into two common exits at both ends.
- Las Vegas / United States : In the World Chess Championship of the World Federation FIDE favorites refuse Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov of Russia to participate because they do not like the tournament system. In the final, the Russian Alexander Chalifman defeated the Armenian Vladimir Hakobjan in six games and became the new world chess champion .
- Sydney / Australia : The New Zealand national rugby union team suffered the biggest defeat in their history at the Tri Nations 1999 when they lost 7:28 to the team from Australia , but won the tournament anyway because of the previous games.
Monday August 30, 1999
- East Timor / Indonesia : In an independence referendum , the population should decide between complete independence of the country and remaining as the Special Autonomous Region of East Timor in Indonesia. The referendum brings a majority of 78.5 percent for independence.
Tuesday August 31, 1999
- Buenos Aires / Argentina : A Boeing 737 of the airline LAPA races over the runway while attempting to take off at Jorge Newbery Airport . In the accident, 63 out of 103 occupants and two people died outside the machine.
- Kuala Lumpur / Malaysia : The Petronas Towers are opened. Their spiers end at a height of 508 m. The roof is 378 m high and is only surpassed worldwide by the roof of the Sears Tower in Chicago and the roof of the towers of World Trade Center 1 and 2 in New York .
