- Bonn / Germany : The German Jens Heppner wins the eight-day first edition of the Germany Tour . After Jan Ullrich's overall victory in the Tour de France in 1997 , the decision was made to organize a cycle stage race in Germany for the first time since the Tour of Germany in 1982 , due to strong spectator interest.

- New York / United States : Deutsche Bank takes over the American investment bank Bankers Trust . The result is the bank with the largest balance sheet total in the world, if you add the last published figures of both houses.

- Biloxi / United States : Boxer Roy Jones junior beats Reggie Johnson with a unanimous victory on points and thus unites the world titles of the WBC , WBA and IBF . Of the four recognized world championship titles in the light heavyweight division , only that of the WBO is missing .
- Paris / France : The German tennis player Steffi Graf wins the final in the women's singles of the French Open 1999 against the Swiss Martina Hingis in three sets.

- Bremen / Germany : The elections for the 15th electoral term of the Bremen citizenship bring the SPD of Senate President Henning Scherf a vote increase from 9.2% to 42.6%. The second strongest force remains the CDU , for which 37.1% of the electorate vote.
- Milan / Italy : The overall victory in the 82nd edition of the wheel - stage race Giro d'Italia goes to the Italians Ivan Gotti . It is his second overall victory on this tour and the 57th for an Italian.
- New York / United States : At the 53rd Tony Awards ceremony , Judi Dench and Brian Dennehy are each recognized for the best performance in a leading role in a play .
- Pretoria / South Africa : The African National Congress wins the second parliamentary election held after apartheid was overcome .
- São José dos Campos / Brazil : 345 prisoners escape from the maximum security Putim prison. It is the largest outbreak in Brazilian history. During the search for the fugitives, two of them are killed and four bystanders are arrested as a precaution.

- United States : The rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers released their album Californication . For the band members it represents a turning point. They all overcame their years of drug addiction.

- Kosovo / Yugoslavia : The Kosovo Verification Mission (KVM) is dissolved and replaced by the OSCE Task Force.
- Munich / Germany : The Fröttmaning wind power plant goes into operation.

- Berlin / Germany : The foundation stone of the Austrian Embassy in Berlin is laid.
- Kumanovo / Macedonia : At the military airport near Kumanovo Svetozar Marjanovic, signed General of the Army of Yugoslavia , Police General Obrad Stevanovic and British General Mike Jackson , the ceasefire agreement of Kumanovo . It marks the termination and the end of Operation Allied Force , a since March 24 ongoing military operation of NATO against Yugoslavia during the Kosovo war .
- Nentershausen / Germany : Construction work on the 1,015 m long Lange Issel tunnel begins.

- Cologne / Germany : The Stability Pact for Southeast Europe is adopted. After the Treaty of Dayton in 1995 and after the end of NATO intervention in Serbia, it forms for the first time an instrument of the international community that is supposed to support and coordinate a comprehensive, active approach to the region's problems.
- New York / United States : The United Nations Security Council adopts Resolution 1244 . It forms the basis under international law for the establishment of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), which is supposed to establish and subsequently control a civil administration in Kosovo . - Brussels / Belgium : The Dehaene II government is punished in the Belgian federal elections for ongoing scandals. After that, the Christian Social Parties are in opposition for the first time in 41 years.
- Strasbourg / France : The four-day election to the European Parliament ends. The conservative EPP-ED party holds the most seats with 233 out of 626. Across Europe, more than half of the voters did not participate, only Belgium and Luxembourg report a participation of over 85%. National elections were held in parallel in both countries.

- Paris / France : The Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer is starting the Embraer E-Jets program at the Paris Air Show with the Swiss regional airline Crossair as its first customer. The aircraft are said to be the answer to the German Dornier 728 .

- Ionosphere : The German research satellite GFZ-1 , measured at the cost of less than one million German marks one of the most successful missions of unmanned space flight, burn up in Earth's atmosphere as planned. In its lifespan of four years and 64 days, it circled the earth 24,000 times and provided laser measurement data.
- Warsaw / Poland : The takeover agreement of Bank Pekao for 52.09% of the shares by the consortium of UniCredito Italiano SpA and Allianz SE is signed.

- Marignane / France : The Eurocopter EC 130 , a seven-seat, single-engine helicopter with turbine drive from the European manufacturer Eurocopter , has its maiden flight.
