Stephen Patrick David Gately (born March 17, 1976 in Dublin , Ireland , † October 10, 2009 in Port d'Andratx in Mallorca , Spain ) was an Irish singer , songwriter and actor .

Career

After he had applied in 1993 to a newspaper advertisement, was Stephen Gately member of following the example of Take That newly formed boy band Boyzone . The Irish quintet celebrated a number of musical successes from the mid-1990s. In the seven years up to their interim separation, hits such as Father and Son , Words , Picture Of You (for the soundtrack to the Mr. Bean film Bean - The Ultimate Disaster Film 1997) or No Matter What (written by Andrew Lloyd Webber for his musical Whistle Down the Wind ).

After breaking up with Boyzone, Stephen Gately started a solo career. In 2000 his album New Beginning was released ; the album and the single of the same name landed in the UK Top 10. The second single I Believe was used as the soundtrack for the film Billy Elliot . After Gately's third single Stay had missed the UK Top 10, it came to a separation from his label Polydor .

Since 2002 Stephen Gately focused on his theater career. He had leading roles in the musicals Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat , Tschitti Tschitti Bäng Bäng , Cinderella and The Wizard of Oz . The musical Godspell followed in autumn 2007 . However, Gately left production after a few weeks due to contractual differences.

In November 2007 Boyzone announced their comeback. They appeared together for the first time in seven years on the British charity show Children in Need . For a tour through Great Britain and Ireland in May and June 2008, the first concerts were sold out after hours. Another tour followed in 2009. A new studio album was also planned to be released in 2010.

Stephen Gately had a brief role in the horror film Credo . In early 2007, Gately appeared on British television on Dancing on Ice . This is the English version of Stars on Ice . Gately and his partner Kristina Lenko took 8th place. The following year he returned as a juror.

Gately also wrote a children's fantasy novel called The Tree of Seasons . After his unexpected death, his husband Andrew Cowles completed the project according to Gately's ideas and published it on his behalf in April 2010.

Private life

On June 16, 1999, Stephen Gately came out as the first member of a boy band to be gay , which sparked a surge of support from fans, the media and the public. At the same time, he confessed to his relationship with Eloy de Jong , a former member of the Dutch boy band Caught in the Act . However, both separated in 2002. A little later, Gately met Andrew Cowles. The two married (symbolically, without legal consequences) in Las Vegas in 2003. On March 19, 2006, Gately entered into a registered partnership with Cowles in the UK .

On October 10, 2009 Gately died while on vacation in his holiday home in Andratx on Mallorca; While it was initially reported that the singer choked on his vomit after excessive alcohol consumption, later investigations revealed that he had died of pulmonary edema . The cause was an undiagnosed heart defect (SADS). Gately was buried in his hometown of Dublin on October 17, 2009.
