Billy Elliot - I Will Dance is the debut film from British director Stephen Daldry . The film is based on an original script by Lee Hall .

action

The film takes place during the British miners' strike in 1984/1985 . In Durham in northern England , miners are trying to strike a number of government mines to prevent the closure . The mood is so heated that there are repeated street fights between strikers, strike breakers and the police. The working class Elliot family also took part in the strike. Both the father Jackie Elliot and his older son Tony work in the mine, the younger son Billy still goes to school, the mother recently passed away.

For Jackie Elliot it goes without saying that Billy traditionally goes to boxing lessons . However, Billy has neither talent nor interest in boxing. One evening when he is supposed to continue training alone, he happens to be in the ballet class with Mrs. Wilkinson, who is practicing temporarily in the same hall with her girls' group, and discovers how fascinated he is dancing. Mrs. Wilkinson also quickly recognizes the talent that lies dormant in Billy and begins to promote him specifically. Billy keeps a secret from his family that he takes dance lessons instead of boxing lessons.

But a few weeks later, Jackie found out about it and decidedly forbade Billy to continue taking part in dance classes, which in his opinion can only soften a boy. However, Billy is determined to continue on the path he has found. This leads to violent conflicts within the family.

Mrs. Wilkinson, convinced of Billy's talent, signs him up for a nearby audition at one of the most prestigious ballet schools in the country, the Royal Ballet School in London . However, Billy cannot keep this first appointment because the family has to assist Tony, who was arrested in a street fight. A subsequent visit by Mrs. Wilkinson to the Elliot family only seems to harden the fronts.

The situation changes on Christmas Eve. Billy's father surprises Billy in the sports hall while dancing with his best friend Michael. When Billy notices this, he defiantly and determinedly dances to his father what he can already do. Now Jackie realizes how much Billy dancing means and how much Billy suffers from his father's resistance and decides to allow Billy to attend ballet school.

The next audition appointment, for which Billy and Jackie have to go to London, turns out to be unfortunate: Apart from the fact that Billy has hardly learned any classical ballet, he also becomes violent out of frustration with a competitor. When the long-awaited letter finally arrives from London, Billy takes a long time to open it. Surprisingly, the school accepts him. However, that also means he will have to leave his family and move to London.

The farewell scene of young Billy fades into another drive, on which years later Billy's father and older brother Tony go to Billy's first big performance in London, as solo dancers in Matthew Bourne's version of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake , in which the men dance the swans . The film ends with Jackie's overwhelmed expression on Billy's appearance.

criticism

The editorial team of Cinema says: “Stephen Daldry's melodramatic feature film debut skillfully embeds the bittersweet story in a hard but heartfelt realism. "Live your dream," says the film. "Ok, done," one calls back enthusiastically. "

According to the Lexicon of International Films , the film is “an elaborately staged drama that uses the entire spectrum of emotional seduction. The film knows how to benefit from the unusual setting and the sophisticated characters as well as from the rousing music. "

BR-Online sums it up: “But not a minute does“ Billy Elliot ”slip away into a gray social study. Cinematographer Brian Tufano, who has shown in films such as " Trainspotting " and " Quadrophenia " that he is a master of visual realism, creates images that are as powerful as they are poetic. Anyone who has enjoyed films like " Brassed off " and " All or not at all " will rediscover all the qualities of current British cinema in "Billy Elliot". Humor, authenticity and lots and lots of feeling. "
