No Matter What is a song from the musical Whistle Down the Wind by Andrew Lloyd Webber (music) and Jim Steinman (lyrics) from 1996, which was successfully interpreted in 1998 by the Irish boy group Boyzone .
Content and background
The chorus of the song is about not being intimidated by others, but about going your own way. It notes, among other things, what God would answer if He answered the prayers of the lyric self . The musical premiered in December 1996.
The version of Boyzone
Boyzone released the song as a single on August 3, 1998 on Polydor Records . In addition to the songwriters Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jim Steinman , Nigel Wright was involved in the production of the song. It is the group's best-selling single and has been released worldwide. The song reached number one in the Netherlands and Great Britain , as well as in Norway and New Zealand . The song reached number two on the charts in Germany and Switzerland and number three in Austria.
According to Lloyd-Webber, the end of the success story at the top of the British charts was due to a "cynical manipulation", since the album no longer met the requirements for a chart entry after an intentional price reduction by Polydor by only one penny and thus room for the next Hit. In an interview with The Times , he accused the industry of degenerating the charts, which used to be a reliable measure of social interest in music, “too little more than a guide for the most successful marketing departments of record companies, which singles almost only use for long-playing CDs To whet your appetite ”.
