Boyzone was an Irish boy band from the 1990s. The band was particularly successful in the United Kingdom and Ireland with six number 1 hits, but they were also able to establish themselves in the rest of Europe and Asia , with No Matter What and the cover songs Words and Father and Son celebrated their greatest successes. By 2007 Boyzone had sold over 15 million records. In October 2019 they gave their last concert at the Palladium in London.

Band history

1993 to 2000

In 1993, while singing, Louis Walsh , who is also the manager of Johnny Logan and the band Westlife , discovered the current members of Boyzone. The five guys were able to prevail among over 300 casting participants. One day later, even before Boyzone had even recorded anything, they were unknown, on The Late Late Show , a well-known evening show on the Irish TV station RTÉ , where they danced to a backing track.

In 1993 and 1994 Boyzone played across Ireland, performing in pubs when they were discovered by the Polygram record company and released their first single, a cover version of the Detroit Spinners hit, Working My Way Back to You, with Mikey Graham and Stephen Gately as lead singers . The single reached number 3 on the Irish charts.

With The Osmond's hit Love Me for a Reason they finally managed to enter the British charts. The single jumped straight to number 2 and from that point on, the way was paved. The 1995 debut album Said and Done shot to number 1 on the British and Irish charts. In the same year they were named "Most Promising Band of the Year" by the British magazine Smash Hits .

The band's second album, A Different Beat , released in 1996, included their first No. 1 hit in the UK charts, Words , as well as hit songs A Different Beat , Isn't It a Wonder , Picture of You and the soundtrack for the Mr. Bean movie Bean - The Ultimate Disaster Movie . The title Picture of You was written by Ronan Keating , for which he received the Ivor Novello Award in 1997 .

Boyzone's third studio album Where We Belong from 1998 contained self-written songs and hits such as All That I Need , the Tracy-Chapman cover version Baby Can I Hold You and No Matter What . The latter was voted best-selling single and song of the year 1998.

The London's Rock Circus invited the band members, their handprints on the Wall of Hands to leave. Other artists who have previously received this include Eric Clapton and Michael Jackson . In Dublin the wax figures of the band members stand next to those of U2 .

The band has always been a big supporter of charity events. Among other things, they sang for the Childliners album The Gift of Christmas alongside artists such as the Backstreet Boys , MN8 , EYC , Sean Maguire , Deuce , Ultimate Kaos , East 17 , Peter André , Michelle Gayle , Dannii Minogue and many others.

In 1999 Boyzone released their greatest hits album By Request , followed by a major tour. During this time there were some rumors about the band, eventually the singer Stephen Gately came out as homosexual and confessed his love for the ex- caught-in-the-act singer Eloy de Jong . In the same year Boyzone announced that they would take a break to devote themselves to solo projects. Shortly thereafter, Ronan Keating released his first solo single When You Say Nothing at All .

The band last performed together in January 2000. In the seven years of the band's history (1993-2000) Boyzone achieved success across the board. They sold over 10 million records, each of their 16 singles hit the top 5 of the charts and they were the first Irish band to have four number 1 hits in the UK. The 1998 tour dwarfed all record sales with 35,000 tickets sold in just four hours.

2000 to 2009

Since separating in 2000, Ronan Keating had started a successful solo career and has already released five albums to date. Stephen Gately had released a less successful album and worked as a stage actor and leading actor in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat until his death . Mikey Graham was also a soloist and is now a music producer; Keith Duffy is an actor and starred in the British soap opera Coronation Street . Shane Lynch was a member of the second season of the reality show Celebrity Love Island .

In 2003 the first rumors arose about a reunion of Boyzone. After the successful return of Take That and their completely sold-out tour in 2006, these intensified, and in the spring of 2007 various sources announced that the five band members were in Dublin for talks with their former manager and current The X Factor juror Louis Walsh met.

In March 2007, Louis Walsh quit The X-Factor on the grounds that it would be the busiest year of his career with Westlife, Shayne Ward and the reunion of Boyzone.

In April 2007, many newspapers reported that the band's comeback had failed - for financial reasons. No record company or investor wanted to market the band for fear that it would not achieve a similar success as with Take That.

On November 5, 2007, Ronan Keating announced that the band would have a special appearance on the BBC for the annual fundraising show Children in Need , where they presented a medley of their hits. However, he did not comment on the possibility of a subsequent tour or a new album.

After a seven-year break, the band made their comeback on November 16, 2007 with their original line-up as a guest on the BBC1 show Children in Need . In May 2008 a tour of Ireland and the United Kingdom followed. The 200,000 tickets were sold within three hours. In September 2008 the tour continued in other European countries. On October 17, 2008 (UK: September 29, 2008) the single Love You Anyway and on October 24, 2008 (UK: October 13, 2008) the comeback album Back Again ... No Matter What - The Greatest Hits was released .

Stephen Gately died on October 10, 2009 while on vacation in Mallorca of pulmonary edema , a symptom of his rare heart disease SADS (Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome, see also sudden cardiac death ), which was only diagnosed post-mortem . The exact illness of Gatelys remained unknown, but his sister Michelle was diagnosed with the hereditary long QT syndrome , which is also assumed for Stephen. In memory of her brother, she set up a foundation to educate and research SADS. Stephen Gately was buried in his hometown of Dublin on October 17, 2009.
