A total of 400 seats

South Africa's second parliamentary election in 1999 , open to all citizens of the country (i.e. not held under the constitutional conditions of apartheid ) , took place on June 6, 1999 and was won by the African National Congress (ANC), which increased the number of its seats by 14. The ANC had also won the previous election on April 27, 1994 with an absolute majority and then elected Nelson Mandela as President of South Africa. Mandela (* 1918) had never planned a second term; he gave his farewell speech on March 29, 1999 and then retired.

Noteworthy was the collapse of the Nuwe Nasionale Party , formerly the Nasionale Party (NP), which without former President Frederik Willem de Klerk lost more than half of its supporters. The Liberal Democratic Party became the largest opposition party , having emerged from the 1994 elections as the fifth largest party . The number of parties represented in the National Assembly increased to 13. The United Democratic Movement party , which was jointly led by former NP member Roelf Meyer and former ANC member Bantu Holomisa , was the most successful of the newcomers with 14 seats Parties.

In addition, the nine provincial legislatures were newly elected.
