General election in South Africa 2004
On April 14, 2004, parliamentary elections took place in South Africa , in which the African National Congress (ANC) was re-elected by an absolute majority in the National Assembly of President Thabo Mbeki , who has been in office since the end of apartheid .
It was the third election since the end of apartheid. The ANC was able to further expand its result with 69.7%, so that it received a two-thirds majority of the mandates with which it could have changed the constitution without the consent of other parties. It is the best result so far for the ANC in national elections (as of 2016). The turnout was 76.7%, which means that 53% of all eligible voters voted for the ANC.
The largest opposition party is the Democratic Alliance (DA), which was also able to record an increase in votes. Presumably she was elected by former Nuwe Nasionale Party (NNP) voters . The Nuwe Nasionale Party, the successor party of the formerly ruling Nasionale Party (NP), lost almost all of its support and deteriorated from 20.4% (1994) to 6.9% (1999) to 1.7%, as many supporters over the coalition of the NNP with the ANC were irritated. The Independent Democrats , a new party led by Patricia de Lille , became the fifth largest force before the NNP.
In addition, the nine provincial legislatures were newly elected.
