Nuwe National Party

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Nuwe Nasionale Party ( NNP for short ; English : New National Party , German for example: "New National Party") was a South African national-conservative political party until 2005 . It was founded in 1997 as a successor to the Nasionale Party (NP), which results from the national unity government ( Government of National Unity ) and the African National Congress had withdrawn (ANC).

The name was changed as an attempt to distance itself from the apartheid past and to redefine it as a moderate, non-racist party. The first chairman was former President Frederik Willem de Klerk , who, together with Nelson Mandela, had received the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in ending apartheid. From 2000 to October 2001 the NNP was part of the Democratic Alliance (DA). Most recently, the party was led by Marthinus van Schalkwyk .

In the parliamentary elections in South Africa in 2004 , the NNP lost a large part of its votes and questions about the future of the party and the leadership of Marthinus van Schalkwyk were raised.

On April 9, 2005, the NNP announced its dissolution. Eight of the nine MPs in the South African parliament had declared that they would convert to the ANC, the ninth lost his mandate.
