Nullsoft was an American software company that distributed the products Winamp , SHOUTcast and Nullsoft Scriptable Install System (NSIS), among others .

history

The company was founded in 1997 by Justin Frankel . The name alludes to Microsoft because zero is less than micro . The company mascot is Mike the Llama . Frankel introduced the llama to Winamp's startup sound, inspired by lyrics by Wesley Willis : Winamp, it really whips the llama's ass!

In addition to the company's best-known product, the Winamp media player, the Nullsoft Scriptable Install System (NSIS) installation software originally developed for the player is also widely used. Both products are free in the basic version, as is access to the SHOUTcast services and various other streaming solutions.

On June 1, 1999, the company was bought by AOL together with spinner.com for a total of 400 million US dollars. Around 100 million were accounted for by Nullsoft.

Nullsoft's San Francisco offices closed in December 2003 when Justin Frankel and the Winamp development team switched to a competitor.

On November 20, 2013, AOL and Nullsoft announced that Winamp and all associated services will be discontinued after 15 years on December 20, 2013.
