The Shika nuclear power plant ( Japanese 志 賀 原子 力 発 電 所 , Shika genshiryoku hatsudensho ) is located in Shika in Hakui County in Ishikawa Prefecture . The facility is 1.6 km² and belongs to the Hokuriku Denryoku . The power plant is located on the coast of the Sea of Japan .
The two reactors were supplied by Hitachi .
Accidents
At the turn of 1999/2000, the radioactivity monitoring apparently stopped working. It turned out, however, that simply no more data was delivered.
On June 18, 1999, there was an incident in which three control rods were removed from the core instead of one being driven into it. As a result, the reactor could no longer be controlled for 15 minutes. All of this only became known on March 15, 2007, the authorities had not been informed.
Shutdown
On March 18, 2009, the Nagoya High Court overturned a Shika-2 decommissioning court ruling. According to the higher court, the earthquake safety of Shika-2 corresponds to the current state of the art and the facility does not pose a threat to the population. In 1999, the original lawsuit against the operator was filed by a group of Japanese citizens demanding that it be closed due to safety concerns in the event of an earthquake. The operator announced in November 2007 that the two blocks in Shika would be upgraded to increase earthquake security. This work in Shika-2 has been completed since March 2008.
