The Mihama nuclear power plant ( Japanese 美 浜 発 電 所 , Mihama hatsudensho ), west of the town of Mihama in Fukui Prefecture , has three units , the oldest of which has been in operation since 1970.
The operator is the electricity supplier Kansai Denryoku . The outputs of the blocks are 340 MW , 500 MW and 826 MW.
Accidents
In 1974 Unit 1 had to be shut down due to leaks in the steam generator pipes. It turned out to be the primary water problem. The plant was rebuilt and the sodium phosphate was replaced by hydrazine . The block went back into operation on April 19, 1980.
After two minor incidents in Block 2 in 1991 and 2003, a fatal accident occurred on August 9, 2004 at 3:30 p.m. local time with four victims among the employees. According to the police, the workers were hit by a steam jet at 270 degrees. Another seven people were injured. The accident was caused by a leak in the turbine hall .
An investigation revealed significant security deficiencies. The tube had not been checked since it was commissioned. As a result of the accident, Yōsaku Fuji ( 藤 洋 作 , Fuji Yōsaku ) had to resign as president of Kansai Denryoku on March 25, 2005 .
Future of the plant after Fukushima
In March 2011, after a strong earthquake and tsunami, the Fukushima nuclear disaster struck . Since then, the Japanese have been saving massive amounts of electricity in order to be able to shut down as many nuclear reactors as possible as a precaution - there are fears of further quakes and aftershocks.
Blocks 1 and 2
The 340 MW block 1 was supplied by Westinghouse and Mitsubishi, block 2 by Mitsubishi. Mihama Block 1 began regular maintenance on November 24, 2010. Block 2 has not been online since 2012 at the latest.
On March 17, 2015, World Nuclear News reported that units 1 and 2 should not be used again. April 27, 2015 was given to the IAEA as the official shutdown date.
Block 3
Block 3 has been shut down since May 14, 2011.
In March 2015, the operator applied for the unit to be recommissioned and for a 20-year extension, which was approved in October 2016. Mitsubishi's pressurized water block, with its output of 826 MW, is identical to Takahama 1 and 2 , the three blocks are the three oldest in Japan that were scheduled to continue operating after the Fukushima nuclear disaster and were the only ones in Japan to have been in operation in February 2019 was extended.
As of February 5, 2019, the operator expects the block to restart in September 2020.
Data of the reactor blocks
