The Japan Power Demonstration Reactor ( JPDR , Japanese 動力 試 験 炉 , Dōryoku shikenro , literally: "Experimental stove for electrical energy") was a Japanese experimental reactor of the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute . It is the only reactor in Japan that has been completely dismantled.

history

On August 22, 1963, the reactor went critical for the first time . The plant was the first nuclear power plant in Asia and was commissioned on October 26, 1963 on the site of today's Tōkai nuclear power plant . The boiling water reactor was shut down on March 18, 1976. From 1986, safe methods of decontaminating and dismantling reactors were explored. These experiments were completed on March 31, 1996.
