The Genkai nuclear power plant ( Japanese 玄 海 原子 力 発 電 所 Genkai genshiryoku hatsudensho ) is located in the southwest of Japan in the town of Genkai in the Higashimatsuura-gun of the Saga prefecture . The owner is the Kyūshū Denryoku (Kyushu Electric Power). The system consists of four seawater-cooled blocks, all of which were supplied by Mitsubishi.

In 2001 reactors 1 and 2 were completely refurbished. The control centers and other important technical equipment were renewed.

In 2010 work began on converting three Japanese nuclear reactors to MOX fuel assemblies : Genkai-3, Tomari-3 and Fukushima Daiichi-3 .

On April 27, 2015, Genkai-1 was finally taken offline, but had in fact been shut down since the end of 2011.

In January 2019, Kyūshū Denryoku announced that it would decide at the beginning of the year whether to apply for a 20-year extension for Block 2 or to shut it down. On February 13, 2019, the company announced the shutdown of the block, which had been shut down since 2011. With this decision, Kyūshū Denryoku, Japan's second nuclear power provider and only one year after Shikoku Denryoku, has clarified the operational status of its entire reactor fleet.

Accidents

On June 6, 1988, water ran out of the primary circuit. One of the tubes suffered from material fatigue.

On July 17, 1998, a leak was found in the condenser of reactor 1 during full power operation. As a result, the performance had to be throttled.

On January 20, 1998, a leak was discovered in reactor 3 during a routine test.

On March 31, 1999, there was a problem in reactor 3 related to damage to the pressure pipes of the steam generator.

After the 2011 nuclear disaster

In early 2011, Units 2 and 3 were shut down for routine maintenance. Following the Fukushima nuclear disaster , Kyushu Electric Power Company (also known as Kepco ) tried to get approval from Genkai City and Saga Prefecture to ensure there were no objections to reactors restarting. The negotiations dragged on for several months.

A meeting was organized to inform the people in the district and to involve them in the decision. The meeting was broadcast live on television and on the Internet, and viewers were invited to submit their views by email or fax. However, it became known that Kyushu Electric's board of directors had instructed its own employees to send positive e-mails for the restart.

It was later admitted that not only employees from Kepco but also from four affiliated companies were involved - more than 1,500 employees in total. A major scandal broke out in the Japanese media because of the manipulation of public participation in this way.

On October 4th, the entire system had to be shut down due to abnormalities in the cooling system.

Block 3 was restarted on March 23, 2018, and Block 4 followed on June 17, 2018.
