The Ikata nuclear power plant ( Japanese 伊 方 発 電 所 , Ikata hatsudensho ) is located on the Sadamisaki Peninsula in Ikata in Nishiuwa County in Ehime Prefecture .
General
There are three reactors on the site. The first two have two circuits (2-loop) and were supplied by Mitsubishi . The third has three circuits and was built by Mitsubishi and Westinghouse . The design has already been successfully tested at the Surry Nuclear Power Plant in Surry County, Virginia .
On November 30, 2006, Areva reported that it would produce MOX fuel assemblies for the third block in Ikata. A similar upgrade has also taken place at the Genkai nuclear power plant .
After the Fukushima nuclear disaster in March 2011, the nuclear power plant was shut down.
Block 1
On March 25, 2016, the operator Shikoku finally decided to shut down reactor unit 1, which had been shut down since September 2011. Unit 1 had been in commercial operation since September 1977 and had an operating license until September 2017. An application for an extension of the license by 20 years to the Japanese nuclear regulatory authority would have been possible. The investment required for this would have taken up to 4 years and cost an estimated 200 billion yen (1.77 billion USD ). On March 28, 2016, Shikoku announced that the shutdown would begin on May 10, 2016. On June 29, 2017, it was reported that the dismantling plan had been approved. This would result in costs of approx. 40.7 billion yen, approx. 3,060 t of lightly radiating waste, and the spent fuel elements are stored in the decay basin of Unit 3.
Block 2
The decommissioning of the reactor block was decided on March 27, 2018. With this decision, seven years after the Fukushima nuclear disaster , Shikoku Denryoku became the first nuclear power producer to clarify the operational status of its entire reactor fleet.
Block 3
On July 15, 2015, the Japanese Nuclear Regulatory Authority approved the restart of Unit 3. On October 8, 2015, the local assembly and on October 26, 2015, the governor of Ehime also approved the restart. The restart of reactor block 3 was announced for January 2016. In fact, Unit 3 was restarted on August 12, 2016 and was fully operational again on August 22. Provided that the final inspection by the nuclear regulatory authority is successful, Unit 3 is scheduled to start commercial operation on September 7th. It was shut down due to a decision by the Hiroshima Supreme Court in December 2017 to September 2018 and restarted on October 27, 2018 - one day after the Hiroshima District Court dismissed an appeal against continued operation. In January 2020, a court again ordered the block to be switched off.
Trivia
The power plant was the setting in the movie Godzilla vs. Mothra (1992, Toho Studios ).
