Oscar Baylin Goodman (born June 26, 1939 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American attorney and was Mayor of Las Vegas , Nevada from 1999 to 2011 . He belonged to the Democratic Party .

biography

Goodman was born into a Jewish family in Philadelphia. In 1961 he graduated from Haverford College . In 1964 he received his doctorate in law from the University of Pennsylvania Law School . He was inducted into the Nevada Bar Association in 1965 and served as a public defender in Clark County from 1966 to 1967 . He is married and has four kids.

During his career as a criminal defense attorney, he has been the advocate of some of the major organized crime giants such as: B. Meyer Lansky , Nicky Scarfo , Phil Leonetti , the former boss of the Stardust Casino, Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal , and Anthony Spilotro , who was notorious for his violent character. In the movie Casino , Spilotro was portrayed by Joe Pesci , and Goodman made a cameo .

On June 8, 1999, Goodman was elected Mayor of Las Vegas with 63.76% of the vote. Since June 28, 1999, he has been the first Mayor of Las Vegas to have his face featured on casino chips. The chips were issued by the Four Queens Hotel and Casino . In the April 2007 election, Goodman was re-elected for another four years with 84% of the vote.
