History and description

The Enercon E-66 wind turbine went into operation on June 8, 1999 on the Fröttmaninger Berg (former garbage dump). Since the mountain protrudes about 70 meters from the area, the wind conditions are much more favorable than usual in Munich. The peak output of the almost 100 m high system is 1.5  MW and it produces around 1800 MWh of electrical energy per year  . In addition to being switched off in the event of a storm or if there is a risk of ice formation, the system also switches off when a certain sound level is exceeded. Furthermore, there is no operation at certain positions of the sun (see shadows cast by wind turbines ). According to the operator, Stadtwerke München , the system achieves an availability of 90% despite these measures. Based on the nominal output of 1.5  MW and an annual electricity production of 1800  MWh, this results in a capacity utilization of 13.7%; an acceptable value for an inland wind turbine. Due to its location near the busy Munich-North motorway junction , the complex, which can be seen from afar , is a landmark in the north of Munich , along with the Allianz Arena , which is only a few hundred meters away .

From the first weekend in Advent in 2009 until the end of 2009, the rotor blades of the wind turbine were illuminated by around 9,000 glued-on LEDs during twilight and night. This made the system the "largest poinsettia in the world". The aim of the installation was also to create a symbol with special charisma for green technologies and sustainability before the world climate summit in Copenhagen (December 7th to 18th, 2009) .
