- Carhaix-Plouguer / France : The Ofis publik ar Brezhoneg ( German office of the Breton language ) is founded. It is supposed to work for the preservation of the language and culture of Brittany and the Loire-Atlantique department .
- Austria : The Nigerian asylum seeker Marcus Omofuma , a member of the Ogboni , is tied up and gagged by the accompanying officers of the Austrian immigration police on the deportation flight to Sofia , Bulgaria . He dies before landing.

- Weimar / United States : The serial killer Angel Maturino Resendez kills his fourth and fifth victims, the 46-year-old Reverend Norman J. Sirnic and his 47-year-old wife Karen, with a sledgehammer in a small church in Texas.

- Kansas , Oklahoma , Texas / United States : In the Oklahoma Tornado Outbreak , more than 70 tornadoes sweep across the western United States within eleven hours, killing at least 48 people.

- Vilnius / Lithuania : Irena Degutienė takes office as Prime Minister of Lithuania . She was appointed the day before by President Valdas Adamkus .

- Cardiff / United Kingdom : From the election to the National Assembly for Wales goes Labor Party emerged as the strongest force.
- Edinburgh / United Kingdom : In the election for the Scottish Parliament , the wins Labor Party with 56, almost half of the 129 seats. The Scottish National Party ranks second with 35 seats .

- Belgrade / Yugoslavia : During the war in Kosovo , the embassy of the People's Republic of China in Yugoslavia is hit by bombs from the NATO military alliance , three Chinese journalists die and around 20 other people are injured. China is not a party to the conflict in the war and official statements from the United States express regret at the hits.
- Bissau / Guinea-Bissau : After almost a year of civil war , the leader of the rebel army, Ansumané Mané , takes over the office of President of Guinea-Bissau from the ousted João Bernardo Vieira , but hands it over to Malam Bacai Sanhá just seven days later .
- Nancy / France : The heads of government of Germany , France and Poland are meeting for the second time in the context of the so-called “ Weimar Triangle ”. The French President Jacques Chirac is his hope for an expansion of the trilateral relations expression.

- Chile , Germany : The investment protection treaty between the two countries comes into force.
- Dusseldorf / Germany : The from Morocco coming boxer Ben Salah Nordin first won the world title in the super middleweight division on the version of the World Boxing Union by a points victory against the Germans Norbert Nieroba . After the fight, the doping control found some traces of ephedrine in his urine and he lost the title again.

- Moscow / Russia : AC Parma wins the soccer - UEFA Cup after a 3-0 final against Olympique Marseille .

- Aachen / Germany : The Charlemagne Prize is presented to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Tony Blair , for his commitment to peace in Northern Ireland and for his country's "turn" towards the European Union .
- Rome / Italy : Former Budget Minister Carlo Azeglio Ciampi , who allegedly saved Italy from bankruptcy by meeting the criteria for joining the euro area , is sworn in as the new President of the Italian Republic . He succeeds Oscar Luigi Scalfaro in this position .

- Bissau / Guinea-Bissau : After seven days as President of Guinea-Bissau, rebel leader Ansumané Mané hands over the office to Malam Bacai Sanhá , who is supposed to prepare the country for elections.
- Gold Coast / Australia : The amateur astronomer John Broughton discovers the asteroid (17945) Hawass in his private observatory , the Reedy Creek Observatory , in the main belt .

- Columbus / United States : A game between the Columbus Crew and the New England Revolution opens the Columbus Crew Stadium , the first major league soccer stadium specially designed and built for the sport of soccer .
- Transbaikalia / Russia : The Alkhanai National Park is set up on the basis of a regional nature reserve established in 1998 by government decision. It is the easternmost national park in Russia.

- Cannes / France : Director Raúl Ruiz's film Time Found again will premiere at the 52nd Cannes Film Festival, where the film will take part in the Palme d'Or competition.
- Chalandri / Greece : The Greek terrorist organization on November 17th carried out an attack on the residence of the German ambassador Karl Heinz Kuhna . A bazooka rocket causes considerable property damage, but nobody is injured.
- Oslo / Norway : The Czech Republic becomes ice hockey world champion with two wins in the final against Finland .

- Jerusalem / Israel : In the parliamentary elections in Israel the party alliance Jisrael Achat wins . In the simultaneous direct election for the office of Prime Minister, 56.08% vote for Ehud Barak . Benjamin Netanyahu has 43.92% of the total of 3,372,952 votes.

- Birmingham / United Kingdom : Lazio wins the football - European Cup Winners' Cup with a 2-1 final victory over RCD Mallorca . UEFA then closes this European Cup competition.
- Suva / Fiji : Mahendra Chaudhry will succeed Sitiveni Rabuka as Prime Minister of Fiji, making him the first to hold office with Indian ethnicity .
- United States : As a prelude to the commercially successful Star Wars film productions from 1977 to 1983, the movie Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace opens in cinemas .

- Baikonur / Kazakhstan : Nimiq 1 will be launched on May 20, 1999 with a Proton-K / Block DM-3 rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. It is the first Canadian satellite for direct digital television broadcasting.
- Innsbruck / Austria : FC Wacker Innsbruck dissolves after more than 80 years of existence.
- Koblenz / Germany : In the largest bomb found to date after 1945, a British aircraft bomb weighing 1,850 kg is found during excavation work for the new central building of the University of Koblenz-Landau . See also air raids on Koblenz

- Bonn / Germany : The Federal Council approves extensive changes in nationality law, including a. the possibility of their own choice , in which children of parents without German citizenship have to choose the German or that or one of the nationalities of their parents up to their 23rd birthday. The Bundestag passed the changes on May 7th.
- Lomé / Togo : President Gnassingbé Eyadéma appoints Eugene Koffi Adoboli to succeed Kwassi Klutse as Prime Minister of Togo.

- Kansas City / United States : Wrestler Owen Hart dies during a major WWF event in an unsuccessful and unsuccessful stunt .

- The Hague / Netherlands : In his absence, the International Criminal Court for the Former Yugoslavia is bringing charges against the President of the Republic of Serbia Milan Milutinović of persecuting the Kosovar- Albanian civilian population for political, racist and religious reasons. The charges against Milutinović and five other Serbs include incitement to murder and deportation.

- Barcelona / Spain : Manchester United FC beat FC Bayern Munich 2-1 in front of 98,000 spectators at the Camp Nou stadium in the 1998/99 UEFA Champions League final . Up to the 89th minute, Munich led 1-0.
- Kashmir / Pakistan : The Kargil War between India and Pakistan in the conflict over the Kashmir region begins with an Indian attack on Pakistani positions.

- The Hague / Netherlands : The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia is bringing charges against Yugoslav President Slobodan Milošević for crimes against humanity .
- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : Beate Uhse AG from Flensburg goes public on the German stock exchange .
- Austria : During Operation Spring , a large-scale operation by the Austrian police in the fight against organized drug trafficking, around 850 police officers storm the homes and refugee homes of accused throughout Austria.

- Jerusalem / Israel : Charlotte Nilsson wins the final of the 44th Eurovision de la Chanson Grand Prix at the International Convention Center for Sweden .
- Leverkusen / Germany : FC Bayern Munich becomes German soccer champion in 1999 .
- Radstädter Tauern / Austria : A devastating fire breaks out in the Tauern tunnel around 4.50 a.m. after a traffic accident that kills twelve people and injures another 49.

- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : The Frankfurt am Main airport long-distance train station is opened. It is the largest airport train station in Germany.
- Minsk / Belarus : At the Niamiha station of the Minsk Metro , there is a mass panic with 54 dead as several thousand people seek shelter from a storm in the subway.
- Varvarin / Yugoslavia : During a NATO air raid on the Morava Bridge in the Serbian town of Varvarin during a folk festival on the occasion of the Orthodox Trinity Festival , it is destroyed and several people, including Sanja Milenković , are killed or injured. The majority of the victims (10 dead, 17 injured) are challenged by the second wave of attacks on the destroyed bridge, while helpers try to rescue the dead and injured.
