Sharadchandra Govindrao Pawar (born December 12, 1940 in Baramati , Pune District , Maharashtra ) is an Indian politician .

Life

Pawar was a leading Congress Party politician in the 1990s . In 1999, due to opposition to the new party leader Sonia Gandhi, he and other like-minded Congress Party politicians founded a new party, the Nationalist Congress Party , which has its focus in the state of Maharashtra . In Manmohan Singh's second coalition cabinet , he was Minister for Agriculture from 2009–2014 and temporarily also responsible for the food industry and consumer affairs, nutrition and distribution of public goods .
