Irena Degutienė (born June 1, 1949 in Šiauliai ) is a Lithuanian conservative politician , deputy chairwoman of the Lithuanian Seimas , first Lithuanian parliamentary speaker (as a woman), twice prime minister .

education and profession

After finishing high school in Druskininkai , she first attended the Kaunas Academy of Fine Arts from 1967 to 1968 . She then completed a degree in medicine at Vilnius University , which she graduated in 1974. Afterwards she worked as a doctor in the cotton combination Alytus before she was a doctor at the Red Cross Hospital of Vilnius University from 1976 to 1994 . Over the years, further training in the areas of anesthesia , resuscitation and gastroenterology followed .

Political career

After Lithuania gained independence on March 11, 1990, she became State Secretary in the Ministry of Health in 1994. In 1996 she was elected Member of Parliament ( Seimas ), where she has since been a representative of the Conservative Fatherland Union ( Tėvynės Sąjunga ) .

On November 27, 1996, Prime Minister Gediminas Vagnorius appointed her Minister of Social Affairs and Labor. After the resignation of Vagnorius, she was appointed acting Prime Minister by President Valdas Adamkus on May 4, 1999 . As such, she took office until May 18, which she then handed over to Rolandas Paksas .

When Paksas resigned on October 27, 1999 after only five months in office, Degutienė was again serving as Prime Minister. A week later she handed over the office to Andrius Kubilius , in whose cabinet she remained Minister of Social Affairs and Labor until October 26, 2000. Between 2000 and 2004 she was Deputy Chairwoman of the Committee on Social Affairs and Labor of the Seimas. She is currently the leader of the Fatherland Union faction in the Seimas. From November 2008 to September 2009 she was the first deputy chairwoman of the Lithuanian Seimas from September 17, 2009 to November 15, 2012. Since November 16, 2012 she has been Deputy Chairwoman of the Seimas.
