Angel Maturino Resendez (born August 1, 1960 in Izucar de Matomoros , Puebla , Mexico , † June 27, 2006 in Huntsville , Texas ) was a Mexican serial killer who was known as "The Railroad Killer" . He committed a total of 9 murders as an illegal immigrant traveling through the United States , with a further 6 murders attributed to him.

Life

Angel Maturino Resendez was born on August 1, 1960 in Izucar de Matomoros in the Mexican state of Puebla . He lived with his grandparents from age seven to twelve before moving to live with an uncle in Acapulco , where he ran away two years later and entered Florida illegally in the United States. He was picked up for the first time when he was 17 and deported to Mexico. From then on, he began a criminal career in the US states of Michigan , Mississippi , Florida , Kentucky , Louisiana , Missouri , New Mexico , Texas and Georgia . Resendez was sentenced to 12 years in prison for car theft, break-ins, property violations, receiving stolen goods, assault, illicit gun possession, property damage, dodging and carrying a hidden gun. Between 1976 and 1996 he was expelled from the USA eight times.

Series of murders

Resendez committed his first murders on March 23, 1997. In Ocala, he killed Jesse Howell with a hose. He then raped, choked and suffocated Wendy von Huben, Howell's friend. On August 29, 1997, he killed the 21-year-old student Christopher Maier with a stone in Lexington , Kentucky. Maier's girlfriend was raped by him and seriously injured. On October 4, 1998, he broke into a house in Hughes Spring , Texas and killed 87-year-old Leafie Mason. On December 17, 1998, he broke into Dr. Claudia Benton, 39, in Houston , Texas, raped, and beat her with a statue. He then drove his victim's car to San Antonio , Texas, where the vehicle was discovered by police. Inside were fingerprints of Angel Resendez, who was already known to be an illegal immigrant. On May 2, 1999, in a small church in Weimar , Texas, he slew 46-year-old Reverend Norman J. Sirnic and his 47-year-old wife Karen with a sledgehammer. He drove his victims' car back to San Antonio, where the police found the vehicle three weeks later. On June 4, 1999, he killed the 26-year-old teacher Noemi Dominguez in her apartment in Houston, Texas. He then fled with his victim's vehicle.

That same day, he slew 73-year-old Josephine Konvicka at her home in Fayette County , Texas. Eleven days later, he killed 80-year-old George Morber in his trailer in Gorham , Illinois, when he was shot in the head with a shotgun. His 52-year-old daughter Carolyn Frederick, who was also present, was killed. All of these murders occurred in close proximity to railroad tracks, which is why he soon became known as the "Railroad Killer". On June 21, 1999, he was named the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives ( FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives ) list. A reward of $ 125,000 was also offered for clues leading to his capture. He was also suspected of being responsible for 6 to 15 other similar murders near railroad lines.

Arrest and execution

The Texas Ranger Drew Carter has since managed to locate a sister of Resendez who lived in the United States. With the help of this and a clergyman, Resendez, now in Mexico, was persuaded to surrender. On July 13, 1999, he surrendered on a bridge connecting Ciudad Juarez , Mexico, to El Paso , United States. He stated that he did not believe in death and that the murders made him feel like an angel of God. He was on 17 May 2000 sentenced to death on 27 June 2006 in Huntsville Unit with the lethal injection executed .
