John Broughton

John Broughton (* 1952 in Sydney ) is an Australian amateur astronomer .

Broughton performs automated surveys of the night sky using CCD cameras from his private observatory , the Reedy Creek Observatory in Queensland , Australia .

He discovered more than 1000 asteroids between 1997 and 2008 .

He discovered comets P / 2005 T5 (Broughton) and C / 2006 OF2 (Broughton). For this he was awarded the Edgar Wilson Award in 2006.

In 2004 Broughton discovered the Near Earth Object (NEO) (186844) 2004 GA 1 . It was the first discovery by an amateur astronomer of a massive, potentially dangerous celestial body.

Broughton developed the computer programs Scantracker and Scanalyser for the calculation of star occultations by asteroids.

The asteroid (24105) Broughton , discovered in 1999 by the amateur astronomer Charles W. Juels , was named after him on November 26, 2004.
