Varvarin ( Serbian Варварин) is a small town in Serbia in the Okrug Rasina on the Morava with about 2,200 inhabitants. The majority of the population works in small farms. A small textile company produces floor mats as a supplier for the automotive industry .

NATO air strike on May 30, 1999

The place came into the public eye after an air raid by NATO on May 30, 1999 during the Kosovo war . During a folk festival on the occasion of the Orthodox Trinity Festival, this took place on the Morava Bridge of Varvarin, which destroyed it and several people (including Sanja Milenković ) were killed or injured. The majority of the victims (10 dead, 17 injured) were hit by the second wave of attacks on the destroyed bridge, while helpers tried to rescue the dead and injured.

Claims for damages

Some of the victims of the air attack on the Varvarin bridge or their relatives have sued the Federal Republic of Germany for the attack for damages or compensation for pain and suffering, although the Federal Republic itself was not involved in the attack. The Bonn Regional Court dismissed the lawsuit on the grounds, among other things, that the plaintiffs, as individuals, cannot directly invoke the protective effects of agreements concluded between states. A constitutional complaint was not accepted for decision by the 1st Chamber of the Second Senate of the Federal Constitutional Court on August 13, 2013 due to a lack of prospect of success.

Sports

The football club FK Temnić 1924 is based in Varvarin.
