Yisrael agate ( Hebrew ישראל אחת, English One Israel , "One Israel") was an Israeli party alliance of Meimad , Gescher and Awoda , which ran in the 1999 election for the Fifteenth Knesset .
background
Establishing of Yisrael agate occurred since the Avodah, under its chairman Ehud Barak to pass, for the elections on May 17, 1999, more in the "center" of society, not as secular and elitist to the voters of Mizrahi wanted to appear. Since the Gescher party, through its chairman David Levy , among others , was strongly anchored in this population group, and the involvement of the religious Meimad party, the party strategists hoped for a positive result similar to that of the New Labor in Great Britain .
In the alliance agreement , the first place on the list was agreed for Ehud Barak, the second for Shimon Peres and the third for David Levy. In addition, Gescher was assured to receive two more "safe" list places as well as a ministerial position for David Levy. The alliance partner Meimad was promised a safe place on the list as well as a ministerial position for a member not elected to the Knesset . In the opinion polls, the party alliance had 33 seats, in the election it won 26 seats. The 26 seats were the fewest that a largest parliamentary group ever had in the Knesset. In the previous election , the Avoda alone won 34 seats in the Fourteenth Knesset . Of the 26 seats, 22 went to Avoda, 3 to Gescher and 1 to Meimad.
In the election for Prime Minister , which took place at the same time , Ehud Barak prevailed against incumbent Benjamin Netanyahu . In the following coalition negotiations for the formation of a government , the following parties participated in addition to the party alliance: Shas , Meretz , Jisra'el ba-Alija , Mifleget ha-Merkas , National Religious Party and United Torah Judaism . By agreement, David Levy became Foreign Minister and Michael Melchior (Meimad) became Minister for Social Affairs and Diaspora Affairs .
Ehud Barak's participation in the peace negotiations at Camp David with Bill Clinton and Yasser Arafat prompted Gescher to leave the governing coalition on March 7, 2001. On May 7, 2001, the Derech Chadascha parliamentary group and its MP Dalia Rabin-Pelossof joined the government coalition and united with Yisrael Achat. The faction of the Yisrael Agate renamed itself on May 15, 2001 in Avoda-Meimad .
After the dissolution of the party alliance, allegations were raised that the alliance had circumvented the party funding laws . The State Comptroller of Israel , an institution that is only accountable to the Knesset and is independent of the government, Elizer Goldberg, has determined a sum of thirteen million shekels that went to non-profit organizations bypassing the donation limits.
