Life

After attending school in Varanasi, he studied economics at Banaras Hindu University and already joined the Indian National Congress and the "Quit India" movement during his studies and was therefore imprisoned for some time in 1942. Then he was a co-founder of the first Nepalese student association and was also its vice-president for a time. In January 1947 he was also one of the founders of the Nepali National Congress and supported its policy through his work as a journalist . In 1950 he participated in the amalgamation of the Nepali National Congress and the Nepali Democratic Congress to form the Nepalese Congress Party and was soon one of the leading politicians of this party and one of the main leaders of the revolution that led to the fall of the government in 1950.

Bhattarai became Speaker of the House of Representatives in 1960 and spent nearly 14 years in prison for his criticism and opposition to the autocratic system introduced by King Mahendra in 1960 . After his release from custody, he was first acting president of the Congress Party in 1976, before he was President of the Nepalese Congress Party from 1976 to 1996.

After the re-establishment of a multiparty system and democracy , he was appointed Prime Minister of a transitional government made up of representatives from the Nepalese Congress Party and various Communist parties.

His first term as Prime Minister lasted from April 16, 1990 to May 26, 1991. During this term, he held the first free elections in Nepal in 30 years and implemented a new constitution guaranteeing democratic rights. As prime minister, he made official visits to India , Japan and the United Kingdom and initiated in 1990, a Nepalese delegation to a meeting of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation ( Asian Association for Regional Cooperation ) in the Maldives .

After the victory of the Nepalese Congress Party in the parliamentary elections, he became Prime Minister again on May 31, 1999 and was in office until March 22, 2000. The reason for his resignation after only nine months in office were tensions within the factions of the Congress party. During his tenure, however, he achieved great recognition for his stand against corruption and nepotism .

Bhattarei, who died of multiple organ failure , was also foreign minister during his tenure as prime minister.
