Surya Bahadur Thapa
Surya Bahadur Thapa (born March 21, 1928 in the village of Muga, Dhankuta District , Koshi Zone , East ( Purva ) region, † April 15, 2015 in New Delhi ) was a Nepalese politician .
Life
Thapa began his political career in 1958 when he was elected a member of the National Assembly and Chairman of the Advisory Council. In 1959 he was elected a member of the House of Lords. In 1960 he was appointed Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Industry in the first government of Prime Minister Tulsi Giri . During a cabinet reshuffle, he was appointed Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs in 1962. On December 23, 1963 he became Giri's successor for the first time in a government that was in office until February 26, 1964.
On January 26, 1965, Thapa again succeeded Giri as Prime Minister. In this capacity, he released former Prime Minister Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala in 1967 , who had been in custody since his release in 1960. After more than four years in office, he was succeeded on April 7, 1969 by Kirti Nidhi Bista as Prime Minister. In October 1972 he was arrested himself after calling for democratic reform in a 13-point resolution , and subsequently sentenced to two years in prison.
When he became Prime Minister for the third time on May 30, 1979, he issued an amnesty for all politicians in exile . Between 1981 and 1982 he was also Foreign Minister. Again after more than four years of reign, he was replaced as Prime Minister on July 12, 1983 by Lokendra Bahadur Chand .
When a multi-party system was made possible in 1990 , he founded the National Democratic Party ( Rashtriya Prajatantra Party ) and became its president, while the royalist LB Chand was group leader of the RPP. However, this division of responsibility soon led to a deep rift and a violent power struggle within the party. In 1994, Thapa was himself elected to the House of Representatives in a by-election. On September 12, 1995, the RPP actively supported the Nepalese Congress Party (NCP) in forming a coalition government with Sher Bahadur Deuba as Prime Minister.
In October 1997 he accused Chand of being a pawn in the hands of the Communist Party of Nepal-United Marxists-Leninists (KPN-VML) and left the coalition government that Chand formed on March 12, 1997 with 13 other MPs from the RPP however, it was dominated by the KPN-VML. Thapa then became Prime Minister himself for the fourth time on October 7, 1997 and headed a coalition consisting of the RPP, NCP and Nepal Sadbhavana Party (NSP). After a six-month term, he was succeeded on April 15, 1998 by Girija Prasad Koirala , leader of the Congress Party, in the office of Prime Minister.
On June 5, 2003, he was appointed Prime Minister for the fifth time by King Gyanendra, contrary to the preference of the major political parties, and he again took over the post of Foreign Minister in his government. After almost a year in office, he was dismissed on June 3, 2004 and handed over the office to Sher Bahadur Deuba .
Most recently he left the RPP and became the founder and president of the National People's Power Party ( Rashtriya Janashakti Party ) in 2005 , which only won 3 of the 601 seats in the election for the Constituent Assembly of Nepal in 2008 .
