Maria Philomena Liberia-Peters (born May 20, 1941 in Willemstad , Curaçao ) is a politician of the Netherlands Antilles .

biography

At the beginning of the 1970s she organized parent groups for political and social actions and soon afterwards joined the National People's Party (Nationale Volkspartij). For this she was elected member of the Island Council of Curaçao in 1975 . This body also sent her to the Executive Council between 1975 and 1980, which met at regular intervals with the representatives of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands .

In 1982 Liberia-Peters was elected as a member of the parliament of the Netherlands Antilles (Staten van de Nederlandse Antillen) as the candidate of the NVP for Curaçao and was economic minister from December 1982 to July 1983 in a coalition government formed by Dominico F. Martina , which broke up in June 1984 .

On September 18, 1984, she succeeded Martina herself as Prime Minister of the Netherlands Antilles . Her first term as head of government lasted until January 1, 1986. She then became leader of the opposition in parliament.

As the successor to Martina, she became Prime Minister again on May 17, 1988. As such, she formed the government until her party's electoral defeat on September 25, 1993. Afterwards she was again an opposition leader in the Staten van de Nederlandse Antilles. In 1994 she resigned as chairman of the National People's Party and withdrew from political life after giving up her parliamentary mandate.
