Dhankuta ( Nepali धनकुटा ) is a city ( municipality ) in the district of the same name in Province No. 1 in eastern Nepal .
Until the introduction of the districts in 1963, Dhankuta was the administrative center of the entire north-east of the country.
Originally a Newar settlement, today different Nepalese ethnic groups live in Dhankuta: Magar , Rai , Limbu and Tamang . The city is located on an important cul-de-sac from the Terai into the Himalayas or the hinterland of the Arun , the Koshi Rajmarg . In 2014, the neighboring Village Development Committees Belhara and Bhirgaun were incorporated. The urban area now covers 110.8 km².
Residents
At the 2011 census, the city of Dhankuta had 26,440 inhabitants (12,378 of them male) in 7204 households. Including the VDCs Belhara and Bhirgaun , the population was 36,619 (17,167 male) in 9,460 households.
