The Arun ( Nepali अरुण नदी) is a source river of the Koshi in the east of Nepal .

The upper reaches of the river in Tibet ( People's Republic of China ) is called Bum Chu ( Tibetan བུམ་ ཆུ ) and has its source in the highlands of Tibet . The Arun flows from the Chinese-Nepalese border in a predominantly southern direction through the Sagarmatha administrative zone . It forms the eastern border of the Makalu-Barun National Park . Its valley cuts through the main Himalayan ridge and lies between the 8000m mountains Kangchenjunga in the east and Makalu in the west. After about 250 km the Arun meets the Sunkoshi , which flows in from the west. Shortly afterwards Tamor comes from the east. Together the three rivers form the Koshi, which flows further south, crosses the Indian border and finally flows into the Ganges . The Arun is one of the rivers with the most water in Nepal. The Arun contributes 37% to the outflow of the Koshi.
