List of cities in Nepal

This list of cities in Nepal lists the independent municipalities ( Nepali : nagarpalika ; English : municipality ) of Nepal and provides an overview of the development of the population .

There are three different levels of municipal self-government in Nepal, depending on the size and performance of the municipality:

  • Most of the municipalities of Nepal have the 3rd order town charter ( Nepali नगरपालिका nagarpālikā );
  • Pokhara , Lalitpur , Biratnagar , Bharatpur , Birganj , Butwal , Janakpur , Dharan and Dhangadhi have the city charter of the 2nd order ( Nepali उपमहानगरपालिका upmahānagarpālikā );
  • Kathmandu has the first order city charter ( Nepali महानगरपालिका mahānagarpālikā ).

In May 2014 the number of municipalities was increased from 58 to 130; At the end of 2014 another 61 were added and in September 2015 another 26. In the course of the restructuring of the local level and the creation of the Gaunpalikas (rural communities) by amalgamating and abolishing the Village Development Committees on March 10, 2017, the number of municipalities increased to a total of 293 .

The table contains the results of the population censuses (VZ) of June 22, 1991, May 28, 2001 and June 22, 2011.
The district in which the city is located is also listed.
