Biratnagar is a city in southeastern Nepal in the Terai hill country on the border across from the Indian Jogbani .

The city in the Morang district lies at an altitude of 63 to 78  m . The urban area covers 58.48 km².

Residents

In the 2011 census, Biratnagar had 201,125 inhabitants (101,949 of them male) in 45,131 households. The alphabet rate is 80.49%. The main languages ​​are Nepali and Maithili .

economy

After the capital Kathmandu and the cities of Pokhara and Lalitpur, Biratnagar is the fourth largest city in Nepal (see Cities in Nepal ) and the most important economic center with good transport links and the like. a. both to the Kathmandu valley and to Bihar in India . The city is also the district capital of Morang within the Koshi zone and also benefits from the fertility of the region. To the west is nearby the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve , a place for bird watching. The Koshi Gorge on the Koshi River of the same name is impressive. Biratnagar is a hub for air routes in the east of Nepal.

For tourists there are routes to Sikkim and Darjiling . For mountaineers, Biratnagar u. a. Starting point to the Kangchenjunga .

climate

Biratnagar has a tropical climate with hot summers when the temperature never drops below 23 ° C and mild winters where temperatures below 7 ° C are extremely rare. The coldest temperature ever recorded is 3.1 ° C, the warmest 43.2 ° C. Normally the temperatures in summer are between 33 ° and 26 °, in winter between 24 ° and 10 °.
