Birendranagar ( Nepali वीरेन्द्नगर Bīrendranagar , often referred to as Surkhet ) is a city (municipality) in western Nepal and the administrative seat of the Surkhet district in the Karnali province .

The city lies on the northern edge of the Surkhetta valley at an altitude of 688  m . In 2011 it had 47,914 inhabitants.

The valley, approx. 9 km long and 6 km wide, is separated from the Terai by a range of hills up to 1500  m high. Birendranagar was planned as an administrative center and named after its founder, King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev (वीरेन्द्र वीर विक्रम शाह) (1945-2001).

In the middle of the valley, about 3 km south of Birendranagar, there is a small, 70 to 80 m high wooded elevation with the ruins of the Buddhist temple Kakrebihar , which was probably built in the 12th century.
