The province of Karnali is one of the seven provinces in Nepal that play the role of the federal members in the state of Nepal. The province was created by the constitution of September 20, 2015 , which made Nepal a federal state.

The province originally had the number 6, as the constitution provides that the newly elected provincial parliaments should determine the name and the headquarters of the province. In February 2018, the provincial parliament decided that the province should be named Karnali and that Birendranagar should be its headquarters.

history

The province was named after the river of the same name . It was the first province that had given itself a name and determined the final headquarters. This was done largely in consensus of the parties represented in the district parliament.

The Karnali province was formed from the districts of the two former development zones Karnali and Bheri , the Salyan district and the western part of the Rukum district of the Rapti zone.

geography

The province is located in the western part of Nepal. It is the largest province in the country in terms of area, but has the fewest inhabitants. The neighboring provinces are the westernmost province Sudurpashchim , the province no. 5 in the south and east, part of the province Gandaki to the east and the People's Republic of China with the region Tibet in the north.

The province does not have any areas in the fertile plains in the south of Nepal, called Terai , and is therefore the poorest province in Nepal.

In addition, there is the difficult topography in the province, which consists of high mountains and hill country. Important peaks of the province are the Kanjiroba with 6612 m, the Kaqur Kangri with 6859 m and the Changla with 6563 m. Within the province there is the Lake Rara National Park , with the Rara Lake as a name, which is the largest lake in Nepal and the Shey Phoksundo National Park , which is the largest national park in Nepal.

The main towns in the province are Birendranagar , Gumgadhi , Khalanga and Dunai .

Fruits such as apples, oranges, pomegranates and nuts are grown in the province and are traded across the country. Corn, barley, wheat, millet and rice are the most important food crops. Mustard, soy and hot chilli are also some of the most important crops in this province. The very popular red rice variety Jumli Marsi is grown in the Jumla district and grows at an altitude of up to 3050 m in the highest rice-growing region in Nepal. This variety is particularly cold-tolerant and has probably been cultivated for 1300 years in Jumla on the banks of the River Tila .

With the exception of the Trans-Himalayan District of Humla , all other districts of Nepal have access to the national road network. However, the neighboring Dolpa district, located in the high mountains, was only connected to the Jajarkot district by a road in November 2018 .

The roads are usually very narrow, consist only of gravel roads and are risky to drive on. There are airfields in Surkhet, Dunai and Simikot and Jumla.

Administrative division

The province is divided into the following districts:
