The Karnali ( Nepali : कर्णाली Karṇālī [ kʌrˈnɑːliː ]) denotes the upper reaches of the Ghaghara in Nepal .
It arises from the confluence of its two source rivers Humla Karnali (right) and Mugu Karnali (left). The main source river, the Humla Karnali, has its source in the Tibetan highlands in Tibet, west of Lake Rakshastal . The Karnali breaks through the mountain ranges in front of the main ridge. In the south of Nepal it first turns to the southeast, then makes a sharp change in direction and shortly afterwards flows a few kilometers further west in the opposite direction to the northwest. The Karnali now flows a bit to the west and absorbs the Seti from the right. It makes another sharp curve to the left and flows in a south-easterly direction. It picks up the Bheri from the right and then cuts through the southernmost mountain range of the Himalaya system. Before the river crosses the border to India, it splits into two arms ( Geruwa left and Kauriala right). These unite again across the border. From then on the river is called Ghaghara .
