The Kailali District ( Nepali कैलाली जिल्ला ) is one of 77 districts in Nepal and has belonged to the Sudurpashchim Province since the 2015 constitution .

history

Until 2015, Kailali was part of the Seti Administrative Zone .

geography

Kailali is located in the Terai in the west of the country on the border with India . A ridge of the Siwaliks runs through the north of the district .

The rivers Thuligad and the lower reaches of the Karnali run along the northern and eastern borders . The right arm of the Karnali, the Kauriala , forms the southeastern boundary of the district. The Mohana flows along the southern border.

The administrative center is located in the city of Dhangadhi , in the southwest of the district on the Indian border.

Agriculture, including livestock and poultry, the food industry, and service industries such as transportation, hotels, and commerce are the main industries in the district. Rice, wheat, vegetables, fruits and potatoes are the most important agricultural products. Kailali District and the surrounding areas are considered the rice basket of the region and it has many large and well-known food processing operations. The rich forest resources, around 64% of the area is covered with forest, offer not only forestry but also potential for the collection and processing of herbs.

Residents

At the 2011 census, the population was 775,709.

Women suffer from gender-based discrimination in education, nutrition, social and cultural norms. Caste discrimination is still widespread in the district. Members of a number of minorities such as the Tharu , Raji and Badi live in the district .
