geography
The 2246 km² district is located directly on the Chinese border in the Central Himalayas . Its district neighbors are: Kaski , Lamjung , Gorkha , Mustang and Myagdi . The topography is determined by the Marsyangdi River , which has its source at the 5413 m high Thorong La . This pass also forms a transition to the Mustang District after Muktinath .
The Manang District has an enormous wealth of fauna and flora .
population
According to the 2001 census, the district had 9,587 inhabitants and the population density was 4.3 people / km².
Infrastructure
The people of Manang were traders from ancient times . In the course of time, well-maintained supply paths emerged in the district, but no roads. All goods must therefore be transported with mules , yaks or porters . The Annapurna Circuit trekking route also runs through the Manang district on these paths . In the meantime, the residents mainly live from tourism (supply and accommodation for the trekking groups). But traditional agriculture and cattle breeding (yaks) are still practiced.
There is a relatively new, small airport 2.5 km east of the village of Manang .
