The Khotang district is one of 77 districts in Nepal and has been part of the Constitution of 2015 for Province No. 1, .

The Dudhkoshi and Sunkoshi Rivers form the western and southern district boundaries.

The district had 231,385 inhabitants at the 2001 census; In 2011 there were 206,312.
