Ascent history

Until the early 1950s, the Manaslu was hardly explored. In the years 1950 to 1955, after the first British explorations, four Japanese reconnaissance trips were carried out in order to look for possible ascents. On May 9, 1956, the Manaslu was first climbed by a Japanese expedition led by Yuko Maki on the northeast flank .

In 1964, a Dutch expedition successfully climbed the northern summit for the first time. The eastern summit of Manaslu could be climbed for the first time on November 9, 1986 by an expedition led by Jerzy Kukuczka .

The second ascent was made in 1971 by a Japanese expedition over the northwest face . In 1972 a Tyrolean expedition led by Wolfgang Nairz managed to climb the south face , with two mountaineers, Andreas Schlick and Franz Jäger, dying in a snow storm . During this expedition, Reinhold Messner reached the summit of Manaslu on April 25, 1972 (third ascent). Messner was able to get to safety in good time before the heavy storm. He also performed the first ascent of this mountain without additional oxygen.

In 1981 the Austrians Sepp Millinger ( Waidring ) and Peter Wörgötter ( Saalfelden ) managed the world's first descent from an 8000er on skis after climbing the summit. The descent from Manaslu is one of the longest descents in the world due to the relatively low base camp.

On May 10, 1991, a South Tyrolean expedition team, including extreme mountaineer Hans Kammerlander , reached an altitude of 7,500 meters when climbing Manaslu. Due to bad weather, the group turned back. On the way back Carlo Großrubatscher fell to his death over a watch . A short time later, Friedl Mutschlechner was killed in a lightning strike. Hans Kammerlander survived. In the film "Manaslu - Mountain of Souls", Hans Kammerlander tells about the tragedy.

On September 30, 2012, the German Benedikt Böhm set a speed record by taking less than 24 hours to climb and ski down. It was climbed about 350 times in the 2017 season.

Manaslurunde

The trekking route around the Manaslu begins in Arughat Bazar ( 570  m ) or in Gorkha and leads around the mountain in two to three weeks. At the start in Gorkha, the route first leads over the Rupina La pass ( 4720  m ) before it meets the route leading up from Arughat to the Budhigandaki valley north of Jagat . Continuing in the Budhigandaki valley, the path leads through the Tibetan villages of Lho ( 3020  m ), Samagaon ( 3390  m ) and Samdo ( 3870  m ) before reaching the highest point of the tour with the Larkya La pass ( 5135  m ) . The descent is via Bimtang and the village of Tilije, which is mainly inhabited by Gurung . In Dharapani the route meets the Annapurna Circuit and follows the Marsyangdi downriver towards Besisahar ( 780  m ).
