Gorkha ( Nepali भरतपुर ) is a city ( municipality ) in Nepal in the Gorkha district and is located at an altitude of 1070 m . The old royal city is located in the center of Nepal. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Nepal.
From 1996 to 2009 the city of Gorkha was called Prithvinarayan or Prithbhinarayan , named after King Prithvi Narayan Shah , who was born in Gorkha and is considered the founder of the state of Nepal. After the abolition of the monarchy, the name was changed. In 2014, the neighboring Village Development Committees (VDCs) Finam and Nareshwar were incorporated. The urban area now covers 85.8 km².

At the 2011 census, Gorkha (including Finam and Nareshwar ) had 39,262 inhabitants (17,585 of whom were male) in 10,585 households.
Attractions in and around Gorkha
- The old royal palace Gorkha Durbar is considered the main attraction of the city. It is located on a hill, about 1000 meters above sea level.
- Gorkha Bazaar , the traditional street market in Gorkha.
- Gorakhanath Cave , the cave temple that is only about 10 meters below the royal palace Gorkha Durbar, is considered one of the largest sanctuaries in the country.
- The Manakamana Temple in Manakamana , 12 km south of Gorkha, is dedicated to the goddess Durga and is a popular pilgrimage site with around 3000 visitors daily. A cable car leads to the temple from the Trishuli river bank .
- The Manaslu near Gorkha is the eighth highest mountain on earth at 8163 meters. Trekking tours around the Manaslu massif on the Manaslu circular route usually start in Gorkha.
Earthquake in Nepal 2015
The earthquake in Nepal on April 25, 2015 , the epicenter of which was only around 18 kilometers north-northwest of Gorkha, destroyed the Manakamana Temple, which is 11 kilometers southwest of Gorkha.
