Gorkhaland
Gorkhaland ( Nepali : गोर्खाल्याण्ड gorkhālyāṇḍ ) is the name of a postulated new state in India , which is required by the Nepalese / Gorkhas living there . Gorkhaland is located in the north of West Bengal . The Darjeeling district makes up a large part of this .
The majority of the population of Darjeeling and other areas in northern West Bengal are Gorkha of Nepalese origin. Since the 1980s, several competing separatist movements have been calling for an autonomous "Gorkhaland" and independence from West Bengal.
In the summer of 2017, a 104-day general strike for an independent Indian state of Gorkhaland caused considerable damage to the tea plantations.
