Alpinism

After training as a certified mountain and ski guide in 1967, Nairz worked for almost ten years in glacier surveying and then became a mountain guide trainer.

In 1972 he led his first Himalayan expedition to the south face of Manaslu ( 8163  m ). Reinhold Messner climbed the wall for the first time. In 1974 he supervised the expedition to the south face of Makalu ( 8485  m ), but the expedition failed. In 1974 and 1976 his expeditions on the Noshak ( 7485  m ) set altitude records in hang-gliding . In 1978, Wolfgang Nairz was the leader of the first Austrian expedition to Mount Everest ( 8,848  m ). With Robert Schauer and Horst Bergmann, he managed the first Austrian ascent of the highest mountain in the world. Also as part of this expedition, Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler climbed Mount Everest for the first time without additional oxygen. Franz Oppurg also managed the first solo ascent. On the Ama Dablam ( 6856  m ) Nairz worked twice as an expedition leader, in 1979 and 1985. A winter expedition to Cho Oyu ( 8188  m ) failed in 1982 as did one to Dhaulagiri ( 8167  m ). In contrast, Messner and Hans Kammerlander were successful at Makalu in 1986. In total, Nairz traveled to Nepal and Tibet more than 70 times.
