The Mugu Karnali forms the left headwaters of the Karnali in Nepal .

It arises on the southern flank of a Himalayan mountain ridge on the border with Tibet in the northeast of the Mugu district . The river initially flows in a southerly, later in a southwestern direction through the mountains. After about 30 km the Chhapa Khola meets the river coming from the east. After another 15 km, the Langu Khola , the most important tributary, flows into the Mugu Karnali on the left. The Langu Khola drains the Upper Dolpo in the north of the Dolpa district .

The Mugu Karnali now turns to the west on its remaining stretch of flow of about 70 km. She passes the place Pulu . The district administrative center of Mugu is located on a hill south of the river valley. The Rara lake is also south of the river. The Mugu Karnali finally unites with the Humla Karnali coming from the north to form the Karnali. The Mugu Karnali has a length of about 110 km.
