Jiri ( Nepali जिरी Jirī ) is a city ( municipality ) in the Nepalese Himalayas in the Dolakha district .

history

The village of Jiri, which later became the namesake and part of the municipality , was guarded by the Nepalese army during the civil war . This meant that names and passport numbers had to be entered in a book when they reached the village. From here on, on the way to the mountains, the area was under Maoist control . Since they declared that they did not attack tourists, there was nothing to fear except for a possible road toll.

The city was created at the end of 2014 by amalgamating the Village Development Committees (VDCs) Jiri , Mali and Thulopatal . The urban area covers 211.27 km².

geography

The place is at an altitude of about 2000  m on the slope of a mountain.

Residents

At the 2011 census, the VDCs from which the city of Jiri emerged had 15,515 inhabitants (6307 of them male) in 3,414 households.
