The Bagmati Province is one of the seven provinces in Nepal that play the role of the federal members in the State of Nepal. The province was created by the constitution of September 20, 2015 , which made Nepal a federal state.

The province originally had the number 3, as the constitution provides that the newly elected provincial parliaments should determine the name and the headquarters of the province. In January 2020, the provincial parliament decided that the province should be named Bagmati and that Hetauda should be its capital.

history

Since the MPs of the Nepalese Communist Party (NCP), which ruled the province, could not agree on the name and capital of the province, there was no majority in the provincial parliament for a decision. At the beginning of 2020, the party's leadership intervened and instructed Chief Minister Dormani Poudel and the NCP MPs to name the province Bagmati . This has been criticized as this decision would violate the constitution and undermine the federal structure of Nepal and degrade the provincial parliament to a mere command receiver.

On January 12, 2020, Parliament passed the new name with an absolute majority and confirmed the provisional capital Hetauda as the final capital of the province.

It is named after the Bagmati River , which flows through the province.

The province was formed from the districts of the former Bagmati development zone , three districts of the Janakpur zones and one district of the Narayani zone .

Government and Administration

The provincial governor is the head of the province, while the chief minister directs the provincial government. The Chief Justice is the Chief Justice of the Provincial High Court.

Like all other provinces, the province has a unicameral parliament as a legislature. The legislative period is five years. The seat of the provincial parliament is in the Regional Education Directorate in Hetauda .
