The party has the largest number of MPs in the two houses of parliament, the House of Representatives and the National Assembly , as well as in six of the seven provincial assemblies. The Prime Minister of Nepal, Khadga Prasad Oli , who has been in office since the beginning of 2018, is one of the two co-chairs of the party alongside Pushpa Kamal Dahal .

history

Preparations

On October 3, 2017, the two major communist parties of Nepal, the Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxists-Leninists) (CPN-UML) and the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Center) , as well as the Naya Shakti party, announced an electoral alliance for the upcoming parliament - and provincial elections. The three parties also announced plans for the union after the election with the formation of a coordination committee for the union. On October 14, 2017, the Naya Shakti party broke away from the alliance, citing differences over the distribution of candidates with the other two parties as the reason. After the elections, it was decided that the CPN-UML would provide the provincial chiefs in provinces No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and Province No. 5 and that the CPN-MC would be given this post in Provinces No. 6 and 7 . After the constitution of the Nepalese parliament, Khadga Prasad Oli was sworn in as Prime Minister of the CPN-UML on February 15, 2018. The merger of the two parties was originally announced for April 22, 2018, coinciding with the founding of the original Communist Party of Nepal in 1949, but the unification was postponed as there was insufficient time to resolve the outstanding issues.

Union

The CPN-UML and CPN-MC dissolved their central committees on May 17, 2018, and the new party was formed on the same day. Khadga Prasad Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal acted as joint chairmen of the party until a general congress was held. The new party renamed itself the Nepalese Communist Party (NCP) after the Nepalese Election Commission refused to register the new party as the Communist Party of Nepal because another party was already registered by that name.
