Tansen is a city ( municipality ) in south-central Nepal .
The city forms the administrative center of the Palpa district . Tansen is located in the Mahabharat Mountains at an altitude of 1324 m , 57 km as the crow flies southeast of Pokhara . The Siddhartha Rajmarg trunk road (H10) leads from Butwal in the south through a mountain valley to Tansen. The urban area covers 21.72 km².
In the 16th century was the capital of Tansen Magar -Königreiches Tanahun . In the 18th century, Tansen became a Newari trading place on the road from Pokhara to Butwal , an important trade route between Mustang and India .
The well-preserved old town with temples in pagoda style is since 2008 one as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO nominated site.

At the 2011 census, the city of Tansen had 29,095 inhabitants (13,742 of them male) in 8,411 households.
