Butwal is a city with 2nd order municipal rights in southern Nepal .

Butwal is the administrative seat of Rupandehi District . The city is located in the Terai at the foot of the Himalayas at an altitude of 127- 665  m . It is located approx. 240 km west of Kathmandu at the intersection of two important national roads, the Siddhartha Rajmarg from India to Pokhara and the Mahendra Rajmarg , the great east-west connection. Butwal lies on the banks of the Tinau . In 2014, the two neighboring Village Development Committees Semlar and Motipur were incorporated. The urban area now covers 101.5 km².

At the 2011 census, the city of Butwal had 138,742 inhabitants (68,288 male) in 34,097 households.
