Madhyapur Thimi ( Nepali मध्यपुर थिमि ) is a city ( municipality ) in the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal and belongs to the Kathmandu metropolitan area .

The city is located in the Bhaktapur district and borders on Kathmandu to the west and the city of Bhaktapur to the east . The city area is only separated from Kathmandu by the international airport . Madhyapur Thimi is one of the oldest cities in the valley on the trade route between Kathmandu and Tibet . The city is divided into 17 wards . The urban area covers 11.11 km².

At the 2011 census, the city of Madhyapur Thimi had 83,036 inhabitants (42,723 male) in 20,302 households.
