Banepa is a city ( municipality ) in Nepal , 26 km east of Kathmandu , in the Kabhrepalanchok district .

Banepa is an old Newari trading town and is located on the Arniko Rajmarg , the main road from Kathmandu to Tibet . The old town with numerous temples is well preserved. The Punyamata Khola River flows south through the city.

One kilometer northeast of the old town is the Chandeswari Temple , Banepa's most important attraction. The urban area covers 5.56 km².

Residents

At the 2011 census, Banepa had 24,764 inhabitants (12,325 of whom were male) in 5540 households.
